STUDY GROUPS

The weekly or fortnightly meetings, live and online, take place in a circular, creative space, which invites dialogue, debates and the exchange of learning.

The diversity among participants encourages reflection and encourages critical thinking around specific ideas and themes based on previously selected texts, books, films, videos and podcasts.

The discussions, always interesting and enriching, arise from the synergy established by the group. The facilitators chosen by Instituto Rino, are responsible for the content covered and for directing the discussions, in order to optimize the time available.

BIG DATA, POLITICS AND DISINFORMATION

In today's interconnected world, the intersection between big data, disinformation and politics has become increasingly significant, shaping public discourse, electoral processes and governance. Big data, characterized by the vast amount of information generated and collected through digital platforms, has provided political actors with unprecedented insights into voter behavior, preferences and feelings. This wealth of data is leveraged to tailor political messages, target specific demographics, and influence electoral outcomes.

However, the proliferation of big data has also facilitated the spread of misinformation and false information in political contexts. With the emergence of social media platforms and online news sources, false or misleading information can be disseminated quickly and on a large scale, often with the intention of deceiving or manipulating public opinion. Political actors, including foreign governments and partisan groups, have exploited these channels to sow discord, undermine trust in democratic institutions, and advance their agendas.

The use of big data analytics exacerbates these challenges by enabling the microtargeting of misleading content to susceptible audiences. Algorithms designed to optimize engagement and maximize reach can inadvertently amplify divisive or misleading narratives, contributing to social polarization and fragmentation. Furthermore, the lack of transparency and accountability in the collection and processing of big data raises concerns about violations of privacy and democratic integrity.

Addressing the complex interplay between big data, disinformation, and politics requires multifaceted approaches. This entails increasing digital literacy among citizens to discern false information from true information, promoting transparency and accountability in data-driven political campaigns, and implementing robust regulatory frameworks to protect privacy and mitigate the risks of algorithmic manipulation. Furthermore, fostering a culture of critical thinking, civic engagement and responsible digital citizenship is essential to protecting democratic processes and ensuring an informed electorate capable of navigating the complexities of the digital age.
